I lied...
(And please follow me to India next week.)
Hi All,
I’ve just spent several hours trying to cancel a Substack subscription that I didn’t mean to continue after a year. It wasn’t easy.
I support different writers each year. I wish I could support all of them. Instead I rotate to new writers every year. What I’ve recently discovered is that (for me) it wasn't easy to figure out how to change or cancel a paid Subscription on Substack.
Substack does send an email ten days before a renewal to remind you in case you want to cancel. I was not smart enough to figure it out at the time, you all are probably much smarter than me at these sorts of things. My right brain is wired for action. My left brain…not so much.
While I appreciate everyone who has joined me here and contributed financially, I also want to make it easier for you when you decide to not continue as a paid subscriber. Seriously, everyone here has supported me through buying my books, or attending writing workshops and retreats, or contributing to the documentary I’m producing about Charlie (Bodies of Water). And I’m absolutely grateful for your support here on Substack especially because it’s been an important source of sustaining me after losing income from cancelling writing retreats after Charlie died.
Recently I reduced the Paid Subscription Fees for Substack as a way to invite more people into some of the more personal sharing I’m going to do behind a paywall for the next few months. I thought reducing the fee would be activated for all subscriptions. I lied. I discovered today that it only applies to the new ones. If you ever need help in cancelling or changing your subscription, you can reach out to me: betsy@betsybmurphy.com.
Many of you have stayed on at the previous (higher rate)…thank you. If you need help changing anything about your subscription (including cancelling), feel free to reach out to me and I can make it happen from this end. (Email betsy@betsybmurphy.com)

How to cancel paid Substack or change subscription.
If you have issues changing or cancelling your subscription (none of us should spend an hour plus trying to sort it out like I did), just email me and I will make it happen. If you want to change your subscription to the lower rate, we can cancel your current plan and then you resubscribe at the lower rate.
I really appreciate that we are learning new ways to directly support writers. I want to make this easier for both of us.
One last thing. Next week I’m taking a trip to India where I will be filming some of the last scenes for Bodies of Water. I had to rely on booking my flights with frequent flier miles so I didn’t have control over the days I would travel. After booking a flight on February 25th, I realized I’d be landing in India on the same day that I released Charlie’s ashes there in 2023. I will be sharing more of the trip here to all subscribers but it feels like the ending—and beginning—of something special.
Thank you for joining me.
